Eyepiece challenge

Optical devices, such as microscopes, binoculars, or spotting scopes, need an eyepiece to allow the human eye to observe small details in magnification. Ideally, an eyepiece needs to offer excellent image quality to ensure the display corresponds as closely as possible to human viewing habits. The eyepiece should ensure that aspects such as image distortion and contrast correspond to the accustomed perception with natural vision.
For many years, microdisplays have been used to view images with the help of eyepieces. Displays can vary widely: illuminated or self-luminous, with large or small pixels, large or small format, monochrome or color... In an ideal case, the display and eyepiece are finely attuned to adapt the image perfectly to the relevant application.

Project

The requirement for this project was a digital binocular device viewing a (relatively large for a microdisplay) screen with a 22 mm diagonal. In addition, everyone should be able to use the device immediately, without having to first adjust the eyepieces to their individual interpupillary distance.
This condition was met by a large 19 mm eyebox. With a distance of 66 mm between the eyepieces, most people (with a natural pupil distance between 59 mm and 73 mm) can use the device without adjustment. The large eyebox offers high viewing comfort. The image in the display can be captured quickly and easily.
The image quality of the eyepiece is excellent. It provides a continuous, harmonious image. Eyepieces are also ideal for displaying stereo images and guaranteeing spatial perception.
